How to take a soil sample
  • Materials needed: Clean plastic pail, spade shovel or soil probe, Ziploc bag.

  • Procedure: Remove soil samples in an "x" pattern over the proposed food plot. Depending on the size of the field, 10 to 15 samples will be required. Before removing a soil sample, scrape away any vegetation. The sample should be comprised of the first 6 inches of soil. If you are using a spade, remove a V-shaped wedge and then cut a thin slice of soil from one side of the hole. Place the soil sample in the plastic pail. Mix all soil samples from the field in the pail and then place about one an a half cups of this mixed soil in the Ziploc bag. You now have one soil sample that represents the entire food plot.
